The equipment most disposal suppliers quietly hope you will deal with yourself — twenty-year-old control PCs, caked in cutting fluid, still running the line.
A manufacturing site's technology estate looks nothing like an office. Alongside the usual desktops and laptops sit ruggedised shop-floor terminals, machine control PCs bolted into cabinets, handheld scanners, label and thermal printers, quality inspection workstations and rack equipment in plant rooms rather than tidy comms cabinets.
This equipment tends to be older, dirtier, heavier and more awkward to remove than anything in an office — and it is routinely the part of a decommissioning project that gets left behind because the supplier was not equipped for it.
Two assumptions cause problems here. The first is that an old machine control PC holds nothing worth protecting. In practice it may hold process parameters, production records, quality data, recipes and formulations, and cached domain credentials from a network that still exists. Industrial espionage aside, that last one alone justifies proper sanitisation.
The second assumption is that old drives cannot be wiped, so they may as well be scrapped. Frequently they can. We keep adapters for older interfaces including IDE, PATA and SCSI, so legacy drives can be sanitised to NIST 800-88 Rev 2 Purge standard rather than simply thrown in a bin and hoped about. Where a drive genuinely cannot be interfaced or verified, it is degaussed if mechanical or shredded if solid state, and that outcome is recorded against the serial number.
Before you book, send photographs. Industrial equipment varies enormously and a photo tells us more than a description. It lets us bring the right tooling, lifting equipment and PPE rather than improvising on site — which is the difference between a half-day job and a wasted visit.
CAD, CAM and simulation workstations are the highest-risk devices on most manufacturing sites, and among the most valuable. They hold product designs, tooling data, process know-how and customer drawings — the things that actually differentiate the business.
They also hold professional GPUs, substantial ECC memory and high-core-count processors, which have strong secondary market demand. That combination means a workstation fleet deserves both careful destruction documentation and a valuation before it is written off. It is not unusual for the residual value to be several times that of an equivalent-age office desktop.
When a production line is retired or a plant closes, the IT element is usually planned last and discovered to be more complex than expected. Points that consistently matter:
